The Story Behind Our Handmade Crochet Clothing

At Moon Child Fremantle, every piece of our crochet clothing is made with intention, tradition, and heart. From crochet tops like our Bodhi, to crochet cardigans, skirts and shorts, each design reflects our signature boho crochet style.

Handmade Crochet Clothing from Bali

We travel to Tampaksiring, a small village near Ubud in Bali, at least twice a year to work closely with the talented women who create our women’s crochet clothing.

In this village, crochet is more than a craft, it’s a tradition passed down through generations. Many of the 12 women we work with have been learning crochet since they were as young as three years old. Their skill, speed, and artistry are something truly special.

Supporting Female Artisans in Rural Indonesia

We first met Yanti in October 2019, just before COVID. What started with her creating crochet bags to complement our boho outfits has grown into a beautiful collaboration.

Today, Yanti designs crochet clothing pieces that we proudly share with our Moon Child community. Supporting these incredibly talented women and their families in rural Indonesia is at the heart of what we do.

A Day in the Life of Our Crochet Makers

Surrounded by rice fields and tall coconut trees, the women work together in a peaceful, tropical setting. Watching their hands move quickly and effortlessly as they bring each piece to life is something we never take for granted.

When we visit, we often start the day early, sometimes as early as 4am, stopping at the sacred Tirta Empul water temple before heading to the village. It’s a grounding ritual that sets the tone for the day.

Yanti always welcomes us with fresh fruit and local delicacies. As the women crochet, there is constant laughter, conversation, and connection. It’s a beautiful reminder that slow fashion is not just about the product, but the people and stories behind it.

Sustainable Crochet & Zero Waste Design

We are proud to embrace a more sustainable approach to fashion. Nothing goes to waste in our crochet process.

Left over cotton that we have from making our clothes is used to make crochet mandala flowers throughout the year for our bohemian pieces like the Sunflower Cardigan, and stunning crochet rugs. Every detail is considered, ensuring minimal waste and maximum creativity.

100% Handmade, 100% Cotton, Made with Love

All of our crochet pieces are crafted from 100% cotton and are completely handmade. Each item carries the time, care, and energy of the women who create it.

When you wear Moon Child crochet, you’re not just wearing a piece of clothing, you’re wearing a story.
